Illumination for HD Video

There is a simple rule which determines the effectiveness of any video surveillance installation – without light there can be no picture. And since most crime takes place during the vulnerable hours of darkness, today’s HD security systems need to be equipped for round-the-clock surveillance.

Without sufficient lighting, most cameras will capture lower quality, noisier images in dark, night-time conditions. By adding specialized security illumination, such as infrared or white light illumination, to HD cameras that will be used in dark or outdoor settings, you can improve image quality and usability while also reducing the bit rates of night-time video.

Image noise can interfere with compression algorithms, as it is often interpreted as movement on scene. Because of this, night-time surveillance video is less compressed and larger in file size than it should be. Rather than capping bit rates of cameras, which can compromise image quality, or continually adding storage to a security system, it is best to address the root cause of the problem.
